Winners all round in new packaging choice by Coca-Cola Amatil

The environment, a regional community and Coca-Cola Amatil’s (CCA) financial bottom line will all benefit from CCA’s decision to adopt a new packaging technology developed in Australia by Visy Board. The new outer packaging will be used for the full range of CCA’s beverage multi pack cans including Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta.

The decision to adopt the new packaging follows 18 months of co-operative effort by CCA and Visy and the successful completion of commercial trials. The move is consistent with the objectives of the National Packaging Covenant that has been signed by both Visy and CCA

The micro flute packaging will replace coated paper board currently imported into Australia. Visy is currently constructing a new $60 million box factory in Wodonga which will produce the new packaging using high performance, lightweight kraft paper from Visy’s Tumut pulp and paper mill.

Whilst retaining the strength, performance and printability features of coated paper board, the micro flute packaging is much easier to recycle and will potentially divert up to 5,000 tonnes of material from landfill each year.

This initiative demonstrates our ongoing commitment, to continually look at ways of reducing and recycling packaging materials” said CCA Australia’s Managing Director Andrew Reeves. “It reinforces our view that good environmental stewardship can also lead to good financial returns” he said.

Visy Industries CEO Harry Debney said: “Visy is dedicated to working with our customers to achieve mutually beneficial packaging and recycling solutions. This new product will replace imports and improve recycling rates as well as boosting regional Australia by providing a catalyst for the construction of Visy ‘s new Wodonga packaging facility.”
